A Servo Voltage Stabilizer (SVS) — also called a servo-controlled voltage stabilizer or automatic servo voltage stabilizer — is an electromechanical device that continuously maintains the output voltage at a near-constant, pre-set level regardless of fluctuations in the incoming (input) supply voltage. It is the most widely used power conditioning device in Indian industry because it combines high regulation accuracy (±1% to ±3%), a wide input voltage correction range, and high efficiency with a mechanically simple, serviceable design that has been proven over decades.
Why Are Servo Voltage Stabilizers Needed in India?
The Indian electrical grid — particularly at the industrial distribution level — delivers voltage that frequently deviates from its nominal value of 415V (three-phase) or 230V (single-phase). Depending on the location, time of day, and load conditions, grid voltage may be as low as 330V or as high as 470V (three-phase) during different periods of the same day.
This voltage variation — which can be as much as ±20% in many industrial areas — causes serious damage to industrial electrical equipment including motors, drives, CNC controls, HVAC systems, medical equipment, laboratory instruments, and production machinery. The cumulative cost of voltage fluctuation damage to Indian industry is measured in thousands of crore rupees annually in equipment repair bills, production losses, and scrapped products.
How Does a Servo Voltage Stabilizer Work? Working Principle
The servo voltage stabilizer operates on the following principle:
- Sensing: A control circuit continuously samples and compares the output voltage to a reference voltage (the desired set-point, e.g., 415V three-phase).
- Error Detection: If the output voltage deviates from the set-point (either above or below), the control circuit generates an error signal proportional to the deviation.
- Servo Motor Drive: The error signal drives a servo motor in the appropriate direction (clockwise to boost voltage, counterclockwise to reduce it).
- Variac Adjustment: The servo motor mechanically rotates the brush/carbon roller of a variable autotransformer (variac), changing the transformer's turns ratio and therefore the voltage injected into the circuit.
- Correction: The output voltage is continuously corrected until it matches the set-point, at which point the servo motor stops. This closed-loop feedback correction runs continuously throughout operation.
Key Components of a Servo Voltage Stabilizer
| Component | Function |
|---|---|
| Servo Motor | Electromechanical actuator that physically moves the variac brush in response to the control signal. Low-speed, high-torque AC motors are used for durability. |
| Variable Autotransformer (Variac) | The core correction element. A toroidal or disc-wound transformer with a rotating brush contact. Rotating the brush changes the effective turns ratio, injecting or absorbing voltage to correct the output. |
| Main Isolation/Boost Transformer | Series transformer connected in the circuit whose secondary winding is in series with the output. The variac controls the voltage applied to this transformer's primary, thereby injecting or absorbing voltage correction. |
| Electronic Control Circuit | Samples output voltage, compares to reference, generates motor drive signals. Modern digital models use microprocessor-based control for tighter accuracy (±1%) and additional features. |
| Protection Relays | Over-voltage relay, under-voltage relay, over-current protection, time delay relay (for motor loads). Provide cut-off protection in extreme conditions. |
| Manual Bypass Switch | Allows the load to be connected directly to input supply while the stabilizer is taken out for maintenance. Essential for continuous-process industries. |
Types of Servo Voltage Stabilizers
By Cooling Method
Air Cooled Servo Stabilizers: Heat is dissipated through natural convection or forced-air fans. Compact, economical, suitable for capacities up to 45 kVA in clean indoor environments with reasonable ambient temperatures (up to 40°C). Best for office buildings, small factories, and equipment rooms.
Oil Cooled Servo Stabilizers: Core and windings immersed in insulating mineral oil for superior heat dissipation and longer transformer winding life. Standard for capacities from 50 kVA to 2000 kVA and for harsh industrial environments including dusty, humid, outdoor, or high-ambient-temperature locations. Lower winding temperature = longer insulation life = more reliable operation.
By Phase Configuration
Single Phase: For single-phase loads from 1 kVA to 25 kVA. Input 180V–280V, output 230V ±1% to ±3%.
Three-Phase Balanced (Gang Type): All three phases corrected by a single servo motor and common variac. Economical for balanced three-phase loads. Input 300V–470V (three-phase), output 415V ±1% to ±3%.
Three-Phase Independent (Column Type): Each of the three phases has its own independent servo motor and variac. Essential for installations with unbalanced three-phase loads. More expensive than gang type but provides individual phase voltage regulation regardless of phase load balance.
