Oil Cooled vs Air Cooled Servo Stabilizer — Which Should You Choose?

Published by Hindustan Stabilizers Technical Team | February 2025 | 8 min read

When specifying a servo voltage stabilizer for an industrial installation, one of the first and most important decisions is whether to choose an air cooled or oil cooled design. Both achieve the same fundamental result — stable, regulated output voltage — but they differ significantly in their thermal management approach, physical design, capacity range, environmental suitability, maintenance requirements, and total cost of ownership.

Air Cooled Servo Stabilizers

Air cooled servo stabilizers dissipate heat generated by transformer core losses and copper losses directly into the surrounding air. Smaller units (up to approximately 10 kVA) use natural convection (no fan). Larger air cooled units (10 kVA to 45 kVA) use forced-air cooling fans to move air over the transformer core and windings.

The key advantages of air cooled designs are their smaller footprint, lighter weight, lower purchase cost for the same kVA rating, and the absence of transformer oil — which eliminates oil leakage risk and simplifies installation in sensitive environments such as clean rooms and server rooms.

Oil Cooled Servo Stabilizers

Oil cooled servo stabilizers immerse the transformer core and windings in insulating mineral oil contained within a sealed tank. The oil acts as both an insulating medium and a heat transfer fluid, absorbing heat from the windings and conducting it to the tank walls and cooling fins, from where it dissipates into the ambient air.

Oil cooling is dramatically more effective than air cooling for large transformer capacities. This is why oil cooled designs are the standard for all servo stabilizers above 50 kVA. The oil also provides additional electrical insulation to the windings, which enables higher dielectric strength and longer insulation life — a critical factor for continuous 24x7 industrial operation.

Decision Guide — Which Type is Right for You?

Choose Air Cooled if:

  • Your total load is below 45 kVA
  • Installation is indoors in a clean, air-conditioned environment
  • Space is limited and a compact footprint is important
  • The installation environment is oil-sensitive (cleanroom, server room, hospital)
  • Budget is the primary constraint for the stabilizer purchase

Choose Oil Cooled if:

  • Your total load is 50 kVA or above
  • The installation environment is dusty, humid, or outdoor
  • Ambient temperature exceeds 40°C for extended periods
  • 24x7 continuous operation with maximum transformer winding life is required
  • You are protecting high-value production machinery where downtime is extremely costly
